"He was still your father."
"I know that but I can't even remember him. Trust me Bella, he doesn't mean shit to me. I hope he is dancing with demons in hell."
"I'm sure Jade would beg to differ. She loved her dad." I point out and he straightens up at the mention of Jade.
"Where is she? Is she okay?" He asks in pure concern and I smile despite myself.
"George will take care of her. You care about her, don't you?"
He shrugs.
"She's my sister so I don't have a choice."
"At least this sibling thing is making you more responsible."
He grins lightly. "To be honest, I didn't like her much the first time we met. She was too outspoken, she curses like a drunk sailor and she can kick anyone's ass. Now that she is my sister, I think those traits are just awesome. No one can tell her shit. Don't I have a kick-ass sister?"
He is grinning proudly and I can't help but laugh. Jay was right, Ethan having a sister is for the best.
"You are glad to have a sister, aren't you?"
"It isn't so bad. I saw a guy hitting his girlfriend outside our apartments last night. I kept thinking, imagining that that could be Jade some day. And I broke the idiots nose."
"Protective big brother, huh?"
"I can't help it. If George tries to hurt her...."
I hit him on the shoulder.
"Just stop it. George loves her. I'm going home to do my assignments. See you tomorrow at my party."
"There's a party at one of my schoolmate's house tonight. Wanna come with me?"
I quickly shake my head.
"No thanks."
"It's okay. So you and Kain are now dating?"
"Yes." I reply without hesitation.
"He better take care of you."
I shake my head while walking to my house. Being a big brother is making him lose his edge.
I help Alicia clean the dishes after dinner before trudging to my bedroom. I haven't slept well in days and I just want to sink into dreamland.
Clutching my teddy bear close to me, I close my eyes and drift to sleep.
My phone's ringtone wakes me up. I glance at the wall clock and it's only a few minutes past ten. Grabbing my phone, my heart skips a beat when I realize that it's Kain. I am excited even after seeing him earlier today.
I answer the call then lie back on the pillows as his smooth deep voice fills my ear making my heart race excitedly. It's weird how he affects me even on a phone call.
"Hey." His voice is low and husky and I swallow hard before speaking.
"Hi."
"Sorry I woke you up. I really needed to talk to you."
"What's happening?" I ask in alarm, sitting up.
"Nothing, baby. Relax. I just wanted us to talk; you know? About us."
I sink back on the pillows.
"Yeah?"
"I feel like I'm not doing things right." He says after a beat. "I have no idea what to do to make you happy."
I furrow my brow in confusion. "I am happy, Kain. You make me happy."
"I don't think so. I've never had a girlfriend before, so I'm not sure what you expect me to do to make you stick to me. Just tell me what you want."
"Kain, is there something you are not telling me? Why are we having this talk right now?"
"I saw you earlier with Ethan." He admits after a moment. "You looked so happy, hugging him and all. I haven't you seen you smile even once this whole week. I'm sorry I kept myself all busy and forgot to spend time with you."
I sign deeply. "You're reading too much into this whole thing. I was talking with Ethan about Jade. Nothing else."
"I don't want to lose you to him." He confesses quietly.
"Do you trust me?"
"Of course Belle. It's Ethan I don't trust."
"You're not losing me to anyone. I don't want Ethan."
He exhales in relief. "Good. I felt like hell when I saw you two. I didn't even want to talk to you then. I was thinking you'd accuse me of leaving you alone this whole week. At least now I still have a chance to prove myself."
"You don't need to prove anything."
"Yes I do. I don't want Ethan or anyone else doing anything for you. I want to be the one who is always there for you, Belle. You mean everything to me."
I take a deep breath to calm my rushing heart then close my eyes dreamily.
"So what are you doing right now?".
"Lying in bed."
"I miss you." I say sincerely.
"I miss you too, baby. I'll see you tomorrow at your party."
"Please don't fail to show up."
"I can't."
"Okay."
We stay quiet for a while, just listening to his regular breathing through the phone.
"Belle?" He calls after a while.
"Yes."
"You are my weakness."
I fumble around for words but I can't find any. When did Kain become so adorable? Telling me such stuff?
"Goodnight baby." He says when I stay quiet.
"Goodnight.''
Another bout of silence stretches. I don't want to hang up yet.
"What were you doing here when you saw me talking to Ethan?"
"I was bringing Gianna home."
"Oh, she's okay now?"
"Mostly. She'll have a nurse taking care of her."
"I'll see her in the morning."
"Okay."
"Hang up." I whisper when the silence stretches again.
"You hang up baby."
"I don't want to."
"Neither do I. I wish you were here."
"I know. Me too."
"That's not good for you. Sleep, sweetheart." I can almost feel the grin in his voice.
I sigh when he hangs up.
I will have a very hard time falling asleep tonight. My poor heart won't calm down.
