George is waiting for me when I go back downstairs. He casts Jade a longing look but she just rolls her eyes and goes to the kitchen where Ethan and Cara are waiting for her.
"She's never going to talk to you, is she?" I ask him as he takes my hand to lead me outside. I don't like the way they all treat me like a baby.
"She will. The problem is that she won't even give me a chance to explain. I think I'll kidnap her or something." He is serious and I'm literally scared on his behalf.
"She is going to kill you if you do that."
"I know. Maybe I'll drug her and tie her up first. She is very fierce." The he smiles adoringly. "I love it when she is fierce."
I swoon on Jade's behalf. What did she ever give to the gods to deserve such a man? She got to be the luckiest woman alive. I really hope that she gives him a chance to explain his atrocities sooner or later. Maybe I can try to convince her...
Kain is leaning on his car in the driveway, his hands in his pockets. He watches us as we approach, his eyes straying briefly to our joined hands. He doesn't seem to mind like he would if that was Ethan.
He steps away from the car when I hesitate to approach it and I quickly climb into the back seat. I don't want to sit with him.
I reach for the door to close it and I notice them share a knowing look. I grit my teeth when he tosses his car keys to George. What the hell?
He climbs in and sits beside me while George takes the wheel. Why does he keep doing this? It's so annoying to be honest. But then again, he likes annoying the hell out of me.
I want to ignore him totally but you just can't ignore Kain's presence. He simply demands attention even when he is quiet. I lean back and stare out of the window as George pulls out of the driveway.
Kain shifts suddenly and very deliberately, he hooks an arm around my waist.
What?
I look up at him in surprise and he is watching me, gauging my reaction. I try to pull out of his hold but his grip is firm. When I struggle to free myself, he moves closer such that I'm seated right next to him, our legs touching, our shoulders brushing.
My mouth is suddenly very dry.
I swallow hard and bite my lip, looking away from him but he tugs my chin up to face him. He gazes at me with a tiny frown, his eyes fixed on mine.
"Your eyes are really brown. I never noticed that before." His voice is a husky whisper and my mind turns to mush.
His leans closer, his eyes focused on mine, and my heart thuds like hell. I'm pretty sure he can hear it.
He lifts his free hand and gently tucks a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
"Your heart is beating really fast." He states quietly while pulling back. I feel kind of devoid when he withdraws his arm from my waist and moves away.
"I'm sorry. I don't know why." I stutter in reply and he raises an eyebrow while regarding me.
"I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
I want to tell him that I wasn't uncomfortable but I can't. I don't think I can even speak.
"Are you still mad at me?" He asks and I nod.
"Why? What did I do wrong?"
