"Are you sure? You know you can tell me anything."
"I'm okay." I lie again and even manage to force a smile.
He smiles back fondly, ruffling my hair with his fingers like I am a kid. Ethan, who is watching us, shakes his head when our eyes meet.
"You have a problem Ethan?" Kain asks him.
"Actually yes. You stole my girl so I'm going to fuck your shit up."
Kain actually laughs at that. Did I see Zac tensing?
I'm not sure. Must be my eyes playing tricks on me.
"I'll be looking forward to that." Kain tells him pleasantly.
"Trust me you don't have to wait for long. I'm a very impatient human being." He slurs drunkenly.
"Ethan." Zac warns him quietly.
"What. Don't worry bro." Then he smirks knowingly.
Kain just ignores him. Ethan is not making much sense anyway. Instead, he lies on the grass, taking me with him.
Kain is really into public display of affection. If I didn't know better, I'd say he's just trying to piss Ethan off.
He places his arm under my head to act like a cushion and I turn to look at him, only to find his eyes on me.
"You are jumpy today." He observes while scanning my face, like he is trying to figure out what is off about me.
"I'm just tired."
"We should head back. I don't want to get you home too late."
"You scared of my Mom?" I ask with a smile.
"Not really. I just don't want her to say no the next time I want to take you somewhere."
"So there's a next time?" I ask with a very huge grin.
He pinches my nose.
"Of course silly girl."
He sits up and addresses the rest.
"Let's go home guys."
"So soon?" Jay whines.
"It'll be way past seven when we get to the cabin if we start walking now. And we still have that two hour drive home."
"Let's go guys. I'm tired and we have school tomorrow." Jade says tiredly, her head on George's lap.
"Okay fine. I have such boring friends. Where did you all come from?" Jay asks sourly while strapping the backpack on his shoulders. I know he is kidding, but then Jay is always kidding.
We start walking back to the cabin and i am really tired. I can't believe I will have to endure the four hour walk.
Kain and I walk behind the rest and the whole way, he keeps asking questions. He asks about my dad, Celine and their son. He is surprised that I've never met the boy and I don't intent to.
"But the baby is innocent. He is your baby brother." Kain points out and I quickly shake my head.
"I'm not ready to meet him or Celine yet. Maybe I will with time but right now, I just can't."
"You have to accept nature, Belle. When I found out I had a sister, I went to find her myself. We only found out through the media because Gianna's Mom was blackmailing my dad. I had always longed for a sibling. Dad was never there and Mom was always entertaining guests. I was lonely. I spend most of my time with George and his Mom. She used to act somehow weird when I visited but I didn't mind. I was getting better treatment there."
He pauses and I clutch his hand in both of mine.
"I always had this feeling, like she was keeping a secret from me. But I knew for a fact that George would tell me if she had issues with me or something."
He turns to look at me.
"When I learnt about Gianna's existence, I couldn't believe that I really had a sister. I don't care that we have different moms. I love her either way. My point is, meet your baby brother and bond with him. It's all up to you of course."
"I'll think about it." I promise without meaning it. I'm not going to think about it. I don't want to meet them right now.
"That doesn't sound convincing but it's okay. Once you make up your mind, you will see what I am talking about."
Darkness has already creeped in when we get to the cabin. We pack quickly and the boys help to clear the trash. Jade, Cara, Gianna and I even get the chance to shower.
We all get into the respective cars that we came in so I get to ride all alone with Kain.
This time, he doesn't drive in that insane speed and he appears to be deep in thought. He controls the steering wheel with one hand while the other is holding mine, drawing small circles on the back of my hand absently.
An hour into the journey, I'm feeling too tired and sleepy so I lie back on my seat and close my eyes. I feel the seat reclining and I open my eyes briefly to pass Kain a grateful smile.
*****
"Belle, Wake up." I hear Kain's voice in the distance and I open my eyes.
"We are home." He speaks again and I realize he is standing on my side of the door, shaking me gently. I sit up and he holds my hand, guiding me out of the car then he wraps an arm around my waist to steady me.
When my eyesight adjusts, I realize that we are outside Zac's house and everyone is there. It makes sense because they were carpooling.
"Who is taking me home?" Jay asks.
"I will. I have to take Jade to the hostels too." George offers.
"Let's get going then. I'm hungry."
"What about Cara?" I ask. She smiles tentatively.
"My car is here Bella. Don't worry about me."
I'm not sure how I feel about her.
"Wanna come in for a drink?" Ethan asks me.
Kain stares at him in disbelief. "I'm right here beside her and you are asking her to join you for a drink?"
"Don't mind him. He was drinking the entire time in the car." Cara explains.
"I told you Kain. I always achieve what I want. I want Bella and I'm so taking her from you."
"I want to see you try." Kain warns before he starts leading me towards my house.
"Wait, asshole. Did you know that your brother is a pussy?" Ethan's voice stops me right in my tracks.
Kain must have felt me tensing because he wraps an arm around me before turning to Ethan.
"Whatever shit you are drinking, it's messing with your memory. I don't have a brother."
"Oh you do...." Ethan starts to say in that drunken slur but Zac holds a hand over his mouth.
Oh shit.
My legs are turning to jelly and if Kain wasn't holding me, I'd fall down.
George looks like he just saw a ghost and he stands there stupefied, his arm around his very confused girlfriend.
Jay is biting his lip, his angry eyes trained on Zac.
Ethan pushes Zac away and turns to yell at Kain.
"George is your brother. They all know that. They are keeping it from you! Your father is a manwhore."
Kain stiffens beside me.
"You are drunk, Ethan. Go to bed." He says without much conviction.
"I'm telling you this shit because I am drunk. I promised Zac not to breath a word but you know what? They are all liars. All of them. Aria is your father's bitch. She has been fucking him since long before you were born."
Jade gasps really loudly and I remember that she is among the few who have no idea what is going on. Gianna just leans on the wall with her hands in her jacket pockets.
"What is he talking about?" Kain asks George in confusion.
George makes a small step towards us then stops. He is a nervous wreck.
"I'm sorry Kain. You weren't supposed to find out like this. I was going to tell you after your mom got well."
Kain's arm tightens around me. It's like I'm his only source of strength right now. If only he knew I was among the traitors!
"What were you supposed to tell me?" He asks while shaking his head. He is still in denial.
"That we are brothers. My Mom and your dad....."
"STOP TALKING!" Kain yells before turning to look at the rest of our friends.
"What the hell is going on?"
Jay steps forward. "Look here buddy. We were going to tell you...."
"You knew? Jay? You knew and you never told me?" He asks in disbelief, his voice laced with tonnes of betrayal.
"We didn't want to keep this a secret. We just...."
"Who is we?" Kain interrupts.
"Zac and I. It's obvious he told Ethan.
Kain turns to George who is just standing there.
"This is not a joke, right?"
"No. I promised Bella that I was going to tell you after your mom got better. I just didn't get the chance to do it."
Kain's arm drops from my shoulders and my heart breaks into a million pieces. He is going to hate me too.
"You knew." He states quietly.
I just nod. There's nothing to say.
"Earlier today I was telling you about George's Mom and you didn't say anything to me."
I want to talk but I can't. I don't have anything to say.
He turns back to George whose eyes are wide after realizing what he just did to me. I don't blame him or anything. I deserve it.
"How long have you known?"
"Since we were kids."
"Since..." Kain starts then closes his eyes, biting his lower lip. He suddenly takes his phone out of his pocket and slams it against the wall.
The screen shatters into a thousand fragments.
"You know what? Fuck friendship." He says quietly before he turns to go.
My heart is breaking and tears are falling silently down my cheeks.
Kain takes several steps before he turns to look at me. He gazes at me for a moment, his hands fisting on the sides. He is struggling and his jaw is set.
He walks back to me in long strides and I run to meet him. He catches me when I throw myself into his arms and holds me against him.
I sob on his chest and he lets me even though I am ruining his shirt. His fingers move into my hair and he manages to sooth me.
He lifts my head from his chest and watches my tear streaked face for a whole minute; memorizing every single detail. Very slowly, he leans and kisses me on the lips.
It's quick and intense and I barely catch my breath before he pulls away.
I realize too late that he is telling me goodbye.
He releases me then walks backwards to his car. Breaking eye contact, he gets in and the engine immediately roars to life.
I watch as he makes a sharp turn then he speeds down the street.
My heart goes with him and when his car disappears, a wave of dizziness engulfs me.
Pulling his jacket tightly around me, I sink to the floor.
