"Who is going?"
"George, Kain, Jay, Ethan, Cara, Jade, Gianna, you and I."
"So Ethan is back?" I ask casually. I could use a few more days without him.
"He should be home in the evening. He comes home every Friday. Plus, he wouldn't miss this for anything. Its always so much fun."
"What do you guys do?"
"Mostly we hike, go swimming in a river deep in the woods and laze around the campfire drinking beer."
"Is it safe?"
"Totally. It's a nice cosy place. It cost my parents a small fortune."
"I don't think my Mom would let me go to such."
He laughs lightly. "Jay asked her very nicely at the party last night and she agreed. Daniel was a bit reluctant but he agreed the moment he learnt that Kain will be with us."
I sigh in relief.
"What time are we leaving?"
"Immediately after school."
I almost squeal in delight. I'll be spending the weekend with very annoying boys but I know I'm going to have loads of fun.
****
I'm almost bursting with excitement when I get home. School was pretty boring and I was dying with guilt every time my eyes met Kain's. I felt dreadful, knowing that all of us knew that he was brothers with George apart from himself; and Jade of course.
If he noticed anything peculiar with the way I was acting, he didn't comment on it because we didn't talk much anyway.
He appeared somehow withdrawn.
In my room, I quickly place an empty suitcase on the bed. I stuff three pairs of jeans and shirts inside, three sweatpants and pajamas, a couple of dresses and two pairs of shoes before I remember we are only going for the weekend.
Dumping the suitcase on the floor, I take a backpack instead. I place two pairs of jeans and a pair of sweatpants, pajamas and a few shirts inside. A pair of hiking boots and flat sandals complete the whole packing thing. I stuff my toiletries in the bag and I'm done.
Taking a quick shower, I wear jeans and a T-shirt and literally fly downstairs. There is a note from Mom on the fridge, saying that she went shopping and she'll see me on Sunday. At the bottom of the note, she gives a very strict warning about kissing those boys.
Like I'm even planning to.
Everyone is already outside Zac's house waiting for me. Ethan is standing there looking like a Greek god in dark jeans and a white T-shirt. He smiles before pulling me into a hug.
Kain is seated on his car's tailgate looking at us, his face devoid of emotions. He is wearing a dark hoodie which is hiding the upper part of his face. He still looks somewhat distracted and I instinctively know it's something to do with his Mom. Maybe that's why he never showed up at the party last night. That should also explain why he was distracted the entire day in school.
"We should shop first. We need lots of drinks and snacks. I guess we will make a stop at the store on our way." Jade explains and Jay's face lights up. He believes that food is the best thing that could ever happen to anyone.
"Which cars are we taking?" Cara asks. It's the first time I'm seeing her since last weekend. I'll ask Jade about her escapades later.
"We have a lot of stuff. We should take at least three cars." Jay replies.
"Mine, Ethan's and Kain's. They are more spacious." George offers and everyone seems to agree with him.
"I'm riding with Ethan and Cara. We can stuff most bags in the boot." Jay says while taking his backpack to Ethan's car.
Ethan grits his teeth while looking at me and I know he wanted to ride with me.
"Bella?" George calls.
"She is riding with me." Kain answers, jumping from the tailgate and walking to open the back door. His voice is not compromising and he silently takes my bag from my shoulders, placing it on the back seat next to his.
He opens the front door for me which takes me by surprise and I climb into the shotgun without making a fuss. I know when he is in a no nonsense mood.
I cast a quick glance at Cara as she climbs into Ethan's car and she is glaring at me.
What is my mistake again? I didn't choose to ride with Kain. He did.
Kain of course drives like a mad man and we are way ahead of the other cars in a minute. I glance at him and his jaw is set as he concentrates on the road, his fingers clutching the wheel tightly. He doesn't even seem to remember that I'm in the car with him.
"Kain." I call quietly when he really steps on the gas. I'm scared to death.
He seems to tense at my voice and he turns to look at me, his eyes leaving the road for a second, his fingers slaking on the wheel for a very short moment.
That's all it takes.
The vehicle veers and he momentarily loses control. The car does a zigzag on the road and I am tossed about; the only thing keeping me on my seat being the seatbelt.
I'm scared to death. Surely we are going to die.
Kain curses as he fights to regain control and a moment later, the car comes to a halt in the middle of the road. The force throws me forward and I miss hitting the windscreen by an inch, all because Kain already has his arms wrapped around me.
I gasp for breath, adrenaline rushing through my system from our near death experience. When I lift my eyes, Kain is looking at me, his breath coming out in short gasps. His eyes are wide and concern is etched on his face.
He leans over and unclasps my seatbelt then he pulls me over the console despite the limited space we have, making me land on his lap. He reclines his seat until I'm half lying on him. One of his arms is wrapped securely around me while the other cups my cheek.
He stares at my face for a long moment, his expression full of guilt.
"Are you okay?" He finally whispers with his thumb tracing my jawline, his eyes boring into mine.
"Yes." I squeak. His breath is warm on my face and my senses are fazed.
"I'm sorry, I almost killed you." He breaths, tightening his arm around me.
I want to reply but I do not. His eyes move briefly to my lips and he licks his lower lip.
He raises his smoky eyes to meet mine and I barely get to think about anything because the moment our eyes meet, he raises his face slowly and his lips capture mine.
